The Walk of Life: A Shelter Dog’s Story

A new home. A new friend. A new walk—and a whole new way of looking at life.

Today is a very special day for a shelter dog. He has just been adopted and is beginning his first day with his new family and his new little friend.

As they head out for a walk around the neighbourhood, the little human begins sharing a story about the Walk of Life—and how no two walks are ever exactly the same.

Some walks are easy. Some are uphill and difficult. Sometimes things change unexpectedly. But even when the path gets tough, there is always another part of the journey ahead.

Along the way, the shelter dog remembers his own journey—from having a family as a puppy, to being left behind at a shelter, to being cared for by dedicated shelter workers and volunteers, and finally finding the loving forever home he had been waiting for.

But this isn't just a story to read.

It's a story to explore.

Young readers can join the adventure through fun, interactive activities including:

• Scavenger hunts
• Colour-by-number activities
• True-or-false questions
• Animal identification
• Shelter research
• Donation-list activities
• Helping-stray-animal questions
• Word-scramble puzzles
• Mazes and searches
• Creative drawing activities

Along the way, children are introduced to important ideas about kindness, compassion, friendship, perseverance, helping others, and caring for animals.

Most importantly, The Walk of Life shines a light on the people behind animal shelters—the professionals and volunteers who work hard to care for animals and help them find their way to loving homes.

Because sometimes life isn't about how easy the walk is. It's about how you walk it—and who walks beside you.
